A thing is nauseous if it makes one sick to the stomach; the unfortunate victim of this malaise is nauseated. The common misuse of nauseous can be illustrated with the following sentence: When he sits too long, turns his head too abruptly, or walks any distance, he gets dizzy, loses balance, and becomes nauseous. He doesnt become nauseous unless he turns other peoples stomachs; he becomes nauseated. A person who is nauseated is no more nauseous than a person who has been poisoned is poisonous.
Based on the passage above, which phrase does NOT provide a logical completion to the following sentence?

A person who is nauseated is no more nauseous than a person who has been______

The editor of a local newspaper found that his paper's readership was declining because most articles did not address issues that directly impact readers' lives. To increase readership, the editor decided to print more articles about issues facing the local public school system and contentious school board budget meetings.

Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest reason to expect that articles focusing on local public schools and the school board budget will succeed in attracting readers?

A. One of the core missions of the local newspaper is to inform local residents about the school board and the public school system.

B. In order to make informed voting decisions, local residents need to be informed about the school board budget and its impact on the public school system.

C. School board meetings are open to the public and make the minutes of every budget meeting readily available to the public.

D. The number of local residents who read newspapers today is smaller than it was ten years ago.

E. The vast majority of the local paper's readership is either employed by the local public school system or has children who attend local public schools.

The graphical illustrations mathematics teachers use enable students

The graphical illustrations mathematics teachers use enable students to learn geometry more easily by providing them with an intuitive understanding of geometric concepts, which makes it easier to acquire the ability to manipulate symbols for the purpose of calculation. Illustrating algebraic concepts graphically would be equally effective pedagogically, even though the deepest mathematical understanding is abstract, not imagistic.

The statements above provide some support for each of the following EXCEPT:

(A) Pictorial understanding is not the final stage of mathematical understanding.
(B) People who are very good at manipulating symbols do not necessarily have any mathematical understanding.
(C) Illustrating geometric concepts graphically is an effective teaching method.
(D) Acquiring the ability to manipulate symbols is part of the process of learning geometry.
(E) There are strategies that can be effectively employed in the teaching both of algebra and of geometry.

The function of government is to satisfy the genuine wants of the masses, and government cannot satisfy those wants unless it is informed about what those wants are. Freedom of speech ensures that such information will reach the ears of government officials. Therefore, freedom of speech is indispensable for a healthy state.

Which one of the following, if true, would NOT undermine the conclusion of the argument?

(A) People most often do not know what they genuinely want.
(B) Freedom of speech tends ultimately to undermine social order, and social order is a prerequisite for satisfying the wants of the masses.
(C) The proper function of government is not to satisfy wants, but to provide equality of opportunity.
(D) Freedom of speech is not sufficient for satisfying the wants of the masses: social order is necessary as well.
(E) Rulers already know what the people want.

The studys subjects, who were given cinnamon supplements for 40 days, showed significant decreases in levels of glucose, triglycerides, and LDL or "bad" cholesterol. Nevertheless, similar studies conducted more recently have had inconclusive results.

The statements above, if true, provide the most support for which of the following conclusions?

(A) Cinnamon contains antioxidants, which are known to help prevent cardiovascular disease.
(B) Cinnamon may help kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
(C) Trials on the benefits of cinnamon have been too small in scope to provide meaningful results.
(D) It is unclear whether cinnamon actually benefits people with Type 2 diabetes.
(E) There are no known disadvantages to taking a cinnamon supplement.

Oil company representative: We spent more money on cleaning the otters affected by our recent oil spill than has been spent on any previous marine mammal rescue project. This shows our concern for the environment.

Environmentalist: You have no such concern. Your real concern is evident in your admission to the press that news photographs of oil-covered otters would be particularly damaging to your public image, which plays an important role in your level of sales.

The environmentalists conclusion would be properly drawn if it were true that the

(A) oil company cannot have more than one motive for cleaning the otters affected by the oil spill

(B) otter population in the area of the oil spill could not have survived without the cleaning project

(C) oil company has always shown a high regard for its profits in choosing its courses of action

(D) government would have spent the money to clean the otters if the oil company had not agreed to do it

(E) oil companys efforts toward cleaning the affected otters have been more successful than have such efforts in previous projects to clean up oil spills

DS - Contradicting Statements

$
0

Hey guys!

I have question regarding an overall DS Strategy.

So I have read multiple timesaver know, that the two given statements in a DS question cannot contradict each other.

Lets say a DS Question asks us whether x > 0?

If statement (1) establishes that this is allways true (Sufficient), Statement (2) cannot establish that this statement is allways wrong. So statement (2) could only also prove that the question is allways correct, or be insufficient.

Meaning a DS question like this would never exist:

Is x > 0 ?

(1) x+1 > 1
(2) x - 1 < -1

Because the two statements contradict each other.

My Question now is the following.

If I can somehow say a statement (1) is allways TRUE, isnt one scenario for statement (2) in which the question is FALSE sufficient to prove that the solution is A?

The logic behind it being that statement (2) will not prove that the question is allways FALSE, as this would then contradict statement (1).

Because we have established that Statement (1) is correct (B, C and E are out) and that statement (2) alone cannot be sufficient without contradicting statement (1) (D is out as well) the answer has to be A.

This seems a little to good to be true as it would greatly reduce the workload for the statement (2) in many cases.

Am I missing something?
I hope I could express what I mean.
Should this topic already be discussed some place else, sorry for the repost and thank you for posting the Link to that post ;)

Thanks guys!

Paper lice feed on microscopic spores of a certain fungus that grows p

Paper lice feed on microscopic spores of a certain fungus that grows primarily in damp areas; when these fungal spores are present on the pages of a book, the paper lice will also ingest the paper comprising the pages unless the paper is treated with insecticide. However, many rare and valuable books are too fragile to be treated with insecticide. Dehumidifying the environment to minimize dampness will allow rare books that cannot be treated with insecticide to be stored without risking damage from paper lice.

The argument depends on which of the following assumptions?

A. Paper lice can be prevented from entering an area that is being dehumidified.

B. Treating rare books with insecticide will cause more significant damage than that caused by paper lice.

C. After the fungus has been eliminated, fungal spores do not remain in any significant quantity.

D. It is possible to store rare books in a dry environment without causing the pages to become brittle and crack.

E. No other insects, aside from paper lice, typically feed on the paper used to create books.
