$

Hi everyone ,

I am wondering whether someone can help me . My fiance took the test and did not reach the desirable result. She did the OG 13 twice and the Gmat Prep question Pack twice as well. She took both practice test and all the Manhattan tests. Does anybody can recommend some other materials?

- Question Banks Gmat club , Knewton, Veritas?

besides that , are there more good materials??

Studying strategy?? any advices?? She was scoring 620 / 630 in the Practice tests. Her official score was way too far from that , any tips or recommendations? She is targeting at 650.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Has anyone taken gmat at chennai center & scored above 700 ?

Hi Friends,

Have anyone of you taken gmat exam at chennai gmac exam and have scored more than 700 ? Please clarify. The reason why I am asking is that lot of my friends ( approx 20 ) had taken gmat at this center recently and got scores which are lower than their average scores in manhattan and GMAT prep tests. None of my friends have scored more than 700 in the actual test despite scoring 750-760 marks in their manhattan and gprep tests. So I was wondering whether everyone is facing this issue and whether there is a problem with this center's gmac software especially w.r.t grading. Requesting people to kindly share their good gmat experience in the recent past at this center as I am thinking whether to book my gmat slot at this center or select some other center.

Thanks,

Hari

Creating strong MBA resume

Creating strong MBA resume

Most MBA programs require a 1-2 pages resume in their applications. Your MBA resume should focus on your professional and educational background, and highlight your achievements in these areas.

Here are some tips from Aringo for creating a strong MBA resume:

"CV Speak"
- Less is more.
o Drop any word that is not likely to promote any admission driver.
o If you can say something in two ways, say it in the shorter way.

- In CV's, use "word economy" as much as possible. For example:
o Instead of: the largest bank in Canada --> Canada's largest bank
    o Instead of: a project worth $1 million --> a $1 million project
o Instead of: the financial status of the company --> the company's financial status
o Instead of: negotiations that lasted one year --> one-year-long negotiations

- Words such as "of", "for", "in", "which", "that" should raise a flag: here's a place where you may be able to change the text to "word economy" structure.

- In "CV Speak" you may omit "a" and "the" although it's grammatically incorrect. This is common practice for resume-type documents, to keep them short. For
example: "Led company's negotiations" instead of "led the company's negotiations".

- However, in about half the cases, it's impressive and better to keep the word "the".
o We keep the word "the" when we want to emphasize that something or someone is "The real thing" (singular).
o Examples: "Received the Distinguished Soldier Award", "Presented the company's annual plan to the CEO"

- Try to use the word "and" as little as possible. We need the sentences to be brief and crisp.
    o Instead of using "and":
Either say just one of the things instead of two - one is often enough.
    Or
Break one long sentence into two short sentences. We need the sentences to be short.
    o For example:
The candidate wrote: "Negotiated deal terms and structure with the CEO".
The word "and" raises a flag maybe there's room for improvement here.
    Two alternatives:
    1. One wing is enough: "Negotiated deal terms with the CEO"
    2. Break into two sentences:
Negotiated deal terms with the CEO.
Negotiated deal structure with the CEO.
o Obviously, in this case alternative 1 is better.

    - Try to avoid using words such as "I", "my", "our"

Work Experience

    - Work experience is comprised of responsibilities (less important) and achievements (more important).
    - The responsibilities and achievements usually start with a verb.
    - Avoid using subjective terms such as "excellent" or "fast", use facts and objective terms only.
    - If the numbers related to the responsibility/achievement are large/impressive, provide them. Otherwise, don't.
o Often you can turn an unimpressive number into an impressive number by using %.
o For example, if sales went up from $10,000 to $30,000 - these numbers are not impressive, you don't want to use them.
o Instead, you can say: "sales went up 200%". This is true, and more impressive.
    - Consider including work in the family business (if there is any) - part time or full time.
    - If a person was only doing projects, one after the other, there may be no responsibilities, just achievements.
    - Try to describe any position in laymen terms. Avoid technical/professional explanations.

Responsibilities

    - Responsibility examples:
    o "Manage a team of 4".
    o Conduct development review meetings.
    - Responsibilities in the current position start with verbs in the present simple tense ("manage").
    - Responsibilities in past positions start with verbs in the past tense ("managed").
Teaching assistant positions: if a teaching assistant position included leading class sessions of 50 students - say it (gives us points on presentation and leadership skills).

Achievements

Achievement example:
    - Achieved a 120% increase in Department's net income within 18 months.
o Reorganized the three import activities to fit with the new zero inventory model.
o Re-structured the costing, pricing and financing models of the activities.
o Re-negotiated supplier and client contracts.

    - Achievements are a critical component in the CV. We need strong, impressive achievements.
    - Achievement bullets usually start with verbs in the past tense.
    - An achievement is often connected with a specific project.
    - An achievement is comprised of "action" and "result".
    - You may use sub-bullets, which are sub-components of the general action or of the result.

The result part of the achievement

    - The result sentences are specific facts.
    - The result should include numbers if possible.

Placing the Result in the Achievement
    - Four recommended options for placing the result:
o Option 1: The main, upper bullet will be short. It will hardly include anything but the result. We often use this option if the result is exceptionally impressive. Example:
Led the second largest sale in the company's 20-year history.
    o Managed
    o Negotiated

o Option 2: Put both the action part and the result part in the main bullet and connect them with words such as:
    that cut
    that generated
    which saved
    which netted
    which created
    which increased
    that decreased, etc.

Example:
Led creation of system that cut quarterly analysis costs by $12,000.
    o Managed
    o Persuaded

o Option 3: Put both the action part and the result part in the main bullet. Put them in two separate sentences. For example:
Led post-merger strategy development [[action]]. Net income increased by 15% within two years [[result]].
    o Managed
    o Presented

o Option 4: if the result is not that impressive -
Either include the result in a sub-bullet.
Or do NOT mention the result at all.
If the action part is also not impressive, consider dropping the achievement.

    - Try to avoid "spoon-feeding" words such as "resulting in" and "leading to" ("resulting in a 20% increase in annual profits").
    - Which of the above 4 options to choose?
o The more impressive the result, the more conspicuous (glaring) it should be.
o Use your judgment and practical (content) considerations.

The Best Results

    - The best descriptions of results are relative (descriptions that compare the result to other results).
    For example:
o "Fastest promotion in the Division's history"
o CEO Alan Corey cited project as "one of the three most successful projects in the company's history" (company's annual conference, 11/02/09).

    - If needed: develop, together with the client, a metric that measures the result.
    For example:
    o "defect occurrence rate":
Reduced defect occurrence rate by 50%.
    o "on-time delivery ratio":
Increased the on-time delivery ratio from 70% to 90% within one year (2002).
    o "labor costs":
Led a training program for customer integration teams which generated support-labor cost savings of 50%.

The rise in free,do-it-yourself instructions on the internet

The rise in free, do-it-yourself instructions on the Internet for home repairs has led to a decrease in revenue for home service technicians and an increase in the number of injuries caused by people who have attempted home repairs themselves. Unfortunately, not all of the do-it-yourself instructions on the Internet are written as well as they should be.

Which of the following can be inferred from the argument above?

A. The number of people who are not home repair technicians and who have been injured while attempting home repairs has increased.
B. Most people who are injured while attempting home repairs have done so while following instructions found in free do-it-yourself instructions on the Internet.
C. The overall sale of online do-it-yourself home repair instructions by home service technicians has not been equal to the loss of revenue the technicians have incurred due to free offerings of this sort of material.
D. Most free do-it-yourself home repair instructions found on the Internet do not provide enough clear information regarding safety precautions.
E. As more free do-it-yourself instructions for home repairs are made available on the Internet, home service technicians will suffer more losses in revenue.

Hi,
I will write the GMAT on 16th sept 2013 . I haven't done any research on the institutes that i wish to apply. That will depend on the gmat scores and hence i have left that for later. However as you all know that at the start of the test it is required to select 5 colleges to whom i wish to send my scores.
Since i haven't done any research i have no idea about B schools and their programs.

I am a software engineer with 3 yrs of experience. I would prefer MBA in banking or finance. But other fields are also fine, i haven't done any research on that yet. My mock GMAT scores have always been between 600-650. I am thinking about entering couple of US universities and couple of Europe universities and one Indian bschool.

Pls Help me with this, i have no idea whatsoever!!
Thanks

Will a course help ME?

hello I am looking for some advice regarding gmat prep courses. Will they help me more than self study. I have been doing self study with the manhattan gmat strategy guides for the past six months but have failed to significantly improve my score. In many ways I feel that too much time elapsed and I forgot things I learned when I first started. Do you think that I should take a course? FYI, my first score was a 540 and my best is a 590. My most recent score was a 560. These are all practice test scores. I take the real thing this Saturday. I would like a 650 to get in to my school of choice.

Thanks for any advice.

Finding prime factors help

So I understand that divisibility rules are imperative here. That said, I sort of think my strategy for tackling these problems is wrong. It is taking me too long to figure out the prime factors.

Can someone walk me through how they would look at the numbers?

For instance:

1.) 9450

2.) 1478

3.) 437

My mind likes to start with trying to divide by 2 if they are even, but maybe that isn't the smartest approach.

Does the standard deviation of B exceed that of A?

Sets A and B each contain six positive integers. Does the standard deviation of B exceed that of A?

(1) Every entry of B can be attained by multiplying a corresponding entry in A by a constant integer multiple k.
(2) Every entry in B is greater than every entry in A.

Answer:
[Reveal] Spoiler:
The answer is E. Considering (1) by itself, A could equal B (k=1) or A could have a greater standard deviation than B (e.g., by setting k>1). Considering (2) by itself, A could be {1,2,3,4,5,6} and B could be {7,8,9,10,11,12}, which have the same standard deviation. Alternatively, A could be {1,1,1,2,2,2} and B could be {7,13,18,52,57,64}, in which case the standard deviation of B would exceed that of A. Finally, considering both statements together, it is apparent from the examples above that it is possible for the standard deviation of B to exceed that of A if both statements hold, but if A = {1,1,1,1,1,1} and B = {7,7,7,7,7,7} both statements are satisfied, AND both sets have the same standard deviation, zero. Hence the only possible answer is E.

Chair P, from Design Solutions, cost $60 per chair. Chair Q, from Seat Unlimited, costs $90 per chair. An office manager often has to buy several chairs to stock the floor space of new offices. On one occasion, she orders p of chair P, and q of chair Q. The average cost of a chair would be

average = \frac{60p + 90q}{p + q}

In the table, select a value for p and a value for q corresponding to an average cost per chair of $70. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Ranger: Higher than normal temperatures are to

Ranger: Higher than normal temperatures are to blame for the decline in the Montana wolverine population over the past five years. Yet clearly, trappers have also played an important role in this decline. In the past five years, the number of Montana trappers and hunters claiming their capture or kill of wolverine has risen sharply. Wolverines, they claim, are particularly fierce and dangerous animals that eat about anything, raid trap-lines, steal food from cabins, and ruin remaining food and belongings with musk and urine.

In the ranger's argument, the boldface portion plays which of the following roles?

(A) It is the main conclusion of the argument.

(B) It is an objection that has been raised against the main conclusion of the argument.

(C) It is a judgment that the argument opposes.

(D) It is a finding that the argument seeks to explain.

(E) It provides evidence in support of the main conclusion of the argument.

List of Recommendation Questions

As I begin preparing for materials for my recommenders, I realized there really isn't a LIST of actual questions the letters ask for each school. But in doing some digging I found that there are overarching themes for each school and decided to categorize them below. Some schools don't specifically ask these questions but I think it is pretty important to think of stories that will address each theme and provide the anecdotes to your recommenders.

    1. Interaction, Performance and Impact (ranking, progression)
    2. Leadership Potential (developing others, influence)
    3. Strength and Weaknesses
    4. Dealing with Constructive Criticism
    5. Interpersonal Skills (e.g., maturity, self-awareness, integrity, listening skills, sense of humor, respect for different viewpoints, resilience, sense of others)
    6. Problem Solving and Strategic Skills
    7. Addition Words (final pitch!)

I think these 7 areas cover most of the topics as far as I'm concerned. Just wanted to share my findings with fellow GCers!

The 700 Pledge

The 700 Pledge of a GMAT Test Taker

I have been asked many times by members who scored 600 after 3-4 attempts (often after years of preparation), two main questions: what should I do and why cant I improve my score.

So here is my answer to all of those questions, PMs and posts if you are finding yourself not being able to improve, stuck, or lost, join me in taking this 700-pledge. I have to warn you, however, it involves a lot of hard work, it does not have shortcuts, and the consequence of breaking it are depression, inferiority, and apathy. Proceed only if you think you can handle it and only if your MBA dream is something you are very serious about.

I pledge to:

  1. Align my priorities with goals and if I may have to make hard decision such as shift my study schedule to be before I go to work or before I go to work out, or instead of a Friday night poker game, I will do it.
  2. Keep track of my mistakes. I will maintain an error log for at least the questions I got wrong.
  3. Use the timer with every question and exercise
  4. Commit to building a study schedule.
  5. Ask myself every day if there is anything else that I can do to study/improve/answer/not make mistakes? Is there ANYTHING in this world that can help me? Is it memorizing all formulas? Is it memorizing the question? Is it learning some concepts that are not covered on the GMAT but are important for understanding (verbal or quant), is it stopping before every question and pausing for 5-10 seconds? is it studying at 5 AM? If any of these is yes, no matter how challenging or how painful, I commit to them because I wan to achieve my dream and
  6. Set my preparation at the highest priority (right with my health and family)
  7. Squash every doubt in my mind
  8. Create/write my own notes. I will never write in books - that's worthless. I will take any notes in a separate notebook so that I can remember better.
  9. Do what it takes. If I need to remember the whole book, I will write out the whole freaking book into notes and organize it so that I can memorize it and if it does not work the first time, I am ready to do it again.
  10. Not let GMAT rest. I will be obsessed with the GMAT, with critical reasoning, with identifying assumptions, with calculating speeds, etc.
  11. Get a 700+ score. I may get it easy or I may have to work hard for it. I realize that if I do not get the score I want, it does not mean I am stupid or hopeless or poor. It just means that I am lazy and GMAT was not my priority.
  12. Not take shortcuts in my prep and if I took shortcuts in my past in Quant or Verbal, I commit to undoing them
  13. Not leave a chapter/area/book/test until I can score above 90% of the questions within the time frame.
  14. Stand proud because I have and will do everything in my power to achieve my goal. Should I fall short of that score, I will still stand proud of my score because I have done everything in my power and I have not a single doubt in my mind that not a stone was left unturned and I have done my absolute best. I will have no regrets and no retakes.
