Hi All,
Im here to seek your expert advice in helping me choose the right program. This post is going to be a bit long so please bear with me. I have tried to outline my profile in detail so that its easier for you to give objective suggestions. Thanks in advance for your precious views and help.
I have 13+ years of experience and am currently working in one of Indias top IT companies as VP Products. I started my career as a software engineer and along the way transitioned from a brief stint in technical writing for a semiconductor company to being a project manager in APAC for a telecom giant to now developing product strategy for a top IT company. Following are some milestones and achievements in my personal and professional life:
Did my BS in Physics in Year 2000 (albeit with very average grades)
Played basketball in the university team
President of the university residential hall for 2 terms during undergraduate study
Did MS Computer Science (distance learning) in year 2005
Did a 1 year Executive (distance) program from IIM-Ahmadabad (Top-tier Indian B-School) in 2007
Have a published research paper on Empowering rural masses through wireless communication in a prominent Indian scientific journal. 2 more papers to be published in Jan and March 2014.
Enthusiast sky diver. Will get my sky diving license in May 2014.
Keen interest in photography. Won several local/national photography competitions and expecting to get my work highlighted in international forum soon.
Tried my hand at entrepreneurship. Created an internet startup which got us government funding and national media coverage. But had to wrap it up when the funds dried.
Now at this juncture of my career, I am interested in pursuing a full-time, on-campus MBA from a top tier B-School in Europe/US. My main motive for an MBA is that I want to get back into entrepreneurship as that is my dream. Doing an MBA from a B-School that has emphasis on entrepreneurship, building sustainable business and leadership, will help me in acquiring tools so that I dont repeat my past mistakes. I am hopeful of securing 720+ in GMAT. My target programs are Sloan Fellows MS/MBAs offered by Stanford/MIT/LBS.
Now, here are some of my questions:
With my experience and profile, will I be one of the least interesting candidates for the program?
Apart from the above, I have no significant achievements to boast about. I havent headed a multi-million dollar business directly, neither do I have an Olympic gold medal nor had I made substantial national policies with the Finance Minister of the country. Do I still stand a chance at Sloan Fellows?
I am targeting for admission season of Mid 2015, that gives me a year to prepare and build my profile. To be honest, Ill be actively building some milestones in my profile over the coming year. Will it reflect negatively in my application that some of my big achievements are pretty recent?
And last but not the least, what are my options apart from Sloan fellows? I do not want to pursue an EMBA as Im an international student and would rather go for a full time program than to travel all the way across a continent and just study over weekends. Also, with my experience with my previous EMBA, it is not as respected as a full time on campus program.
Looking forward to expert views/advice and suggestions from you all.
