Barrons GRE 3500 words ? Or 3571 Words?

I have been counting the words in the lists by Barrons.
Barrons claims to have in it 3500 words.
I am attaching the pdf of the barron's 3500
word list document in case someone does not have
access to the word list I am talking about.

Problem is I have made a mistake by
miscounting the number of words in the word list.
I come up with a grand total of 3571 words which is
NOT 3500 words (that Barron's claims) . My count is off
by 21 words. I have made mistakes in my count in one
or more of the Word Lists (total 50 word list).
Would someone be kind enough to please help verify
my manual counting of the words in the word list, please?
Thanks!

Grand TOTAL 3571
First column is the word list number
Second column is the number of words in the word list
Third column is the subtotal (or total words after adding the words in current word list).

The cultural legacy of the British Empire in Singapore contrasts sharply with that of other former British colonies. While countries such as India and Malaysia have de-emphasized the time they spent under British rule, going so far as to change most English place names, Singapore has generally embraced its colonial past.

A recent article by McDermott attributes this difference to a number of reasons, each of which distinguish Singapore from other former colonies. To begin with, Singapore did not have a shared history and culture before the arrival of the British. The area occupied by the modern state was sparsely populated and had been ruled by a series of local empires. A large majority of Singapores present-day population consists of the descendents of Chinese and Indian immigrants that arrived during the colonial period. Secondly, the cultural factors that unite Singaporeans today were developed during British rule. Among the most important of these cultural factors is a shared embrace of commerce and industry. During the colonial period, Singapore became a regional center of finance and international trade, and this status has continued to the present day. Economic prosperity is a national priority for nearly all Singaporeans. Finally, Singapore endured comparatively little strife in its transition to independence. In 1963, the country was joined in a union with the newly independent state of Malaysia through an Act of Parliament. Malaysia had only recently achieved independence, and only after a long guerilla war with the British. Two years later, Singapores union with Malaysia was dissolved and the country became a fully independent state.

Which of the following is the least appropriate example of the Singaporean embrace of British culture?

A. (A) Although most Singaporeans are bilingual and learn another language in addition to English, the language of business is usually English
B. (B) Many hotels and other buildings built during the British colonial period have kept their English names
C. (C) The Singaporean government is based on a parliamentary system similar to that of the British
D. (D) British entertainment such as the BBC is very popular in Singapore
E. (E) British fast foods chains are usually not successful in Singapore, where consumers prefer local cuisine

It can be inferred from the passage the McDermott would most likely

A. (A) believe that Singapore and Malaysia both embrace the time they spent as British colonies
B. (B) consider economic prosperity to be a national priority in Singapore
C. (C) think that ethnic origin is the most important factor in the cultural identity of a Singaporean
D. (D) believe that Singapore replaced British place names with new place names because of a desire to de-emphasize its colonial past
E. (E) have spent considerable time in Singapore in order to learn the unique aspects of its culture

A recent study of the eggs of tree frogs in Panama has provided insights into the concept of phenotypic plasticity. A biologist that studied the eggs observed that they would normally hatch a week after they were laid. However, by touching the eggs, the biologist could induce them to hatch immediately. The biologist likened this touch to the vibrations from an attacking snake. The implication was that the egg, even at an early stage, was flexible. It could either wait its usual full term to hatch, or hatch immediately in response to an environmental stressor. This example demonstrates phenotypic plasticity, which is the flexibility an organism has in expressing its genes. The phenotype is the expression of the genotype, or genetic makeup, and plasticity means the ability to change or adapt. Put another way, genotype is the inherited instructions that an organism receives from its genes, while phenotype is its physical appearance and actions.

Early theories of genetics relied on a cause-and-effect model: everything about an organism, including its phenotype, was determined by its genotype. Phenotypic plasticity, on the other hand, allows for the inclusion of environmental factors. For example, some types of plants can allocate more resources to their roots when growing in low-nutrient soil, or change the size and thickness of their leaves in response to the amount of sunlight they receive. Although genes certainly play a major role, individual organisms are not different simply because they have different genes. Rather, organisms can express phenotypic differences in response to variations in ecosystem, diet, temperature and climate.

The main purpose of the passage is to

A. (A) show how an experiment can replicate a naturally occurring situation
B. (B) define several scientific concepts and give examples of each
C. (C) introduce a theory and then discredit it
D. (D) demonstrate how one organism is similar to every other organism
E. (E) discuss a scientific theory and give some examples that support it

In the first paragraph, the passage suggests that which of the following is true?

A. The amount of time that tree frog eggs take to hatch is relatively fixed, with little variation
B. Even before they hatch, tree frogs eggs are able to respond to stimuli from the environment
C. An organisms phenotype will always be expressed in the same way
D. A tree frog egg will only hatch when the egg is fully mature

Hi MBA Prep School,

I'm finding it really difficult to figure out where I stand when it comes to applying to B-Schools for my MBA and since I do not have too many people around me for advice I'm really hoping that you would help me out by evaluating my profile. I'm most confused about selecting schools and also whether to concentrate on the applications or on retaking the GMAT. The following is my profile-

-28 y/o Indian Male (will turn 29 by the time I start in 2016)

-GMAT 710 (49Q, 39V)- I know its probably on the lower side for an Indian male applicant. Trying to figure out whether to concentrate on the apps or on retaking the gmat.

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree. (Non-Engineering education)

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs (financial and emotional) so moved back.

-Have 7+ years of work experience.

-working as head of the business development and strategy implementation division of a firm based out of New Delhi, with interests across hydropower, textiles and education and annual revenues of over US$125m. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The project is at an advanced stage of implementation and the financial rewards from the project have already started flowing in. The idea for diversification was my brainchild and thus I was made the team leader of the project. I'm also the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role. I've held leadership roles across all the 3 verticals. I regularly deal/interact with clients from all over the world and frequently visit textile marketing events across the globe. The firm however would be a relatively unknown to most people on the admissions team (Well known in India though)

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm within the strategy division and work in new geographies in Western Europe or North America. Long term goal is to take up a senior management role at a fortune 500 firm. In my current role I'm coming up with and executing ideas that lead to improvement in business process and create value for the firm. I think a career in consulting will be a reasonable sell as my STG.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Have been closely associated with environmental research over the last 5 years. Also, Having lost my father to blood cancer I started a cancer foundation in his name and have raised over INR 2.5m which in turn is being used to help underprivileged patients in their treatment. Also organize an annual blood donation camp. I have also redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy. Finally I've also worked for a member of parliament from 2009-2014 on devising a plan for development in the members parliamentary constituency with a population of over 2m residents.

Target Schools- INSEAD, LBS, Duke, Tuck, Darden, Cornell, Ross, Tepper, Emory, Olin, UNC, etc

Thanks

710 Indian Male- Is it even worth dreaming?

Hi guys,

Not in my wildest dreams had I ever thought of applying to Wharton seeing how competitive it is, especially for Indian males. But recently I looked up the MBA program at Wharton and it really struck a chord. Since then I've been trying to justify applying to Wharton. I know I have some glaring weaknesses-
1. Low GMAT for my applicant pool (Will retake and try getting a score closer to 750)
2. Work for a relatively small firm in India (Revenues of over US$150m) but would not expect anyone on the admissions staff to have heard of it. However I do have some really interesting leadership experience stories. It's decently well know in India though.

I however think that through my application I'll be able to share some interesting professional and personal stories.

Would be great if someone could enlighten me- Please do not hesitate in dismissing my case for Wharton if you think so.

First Attempt: 600 in first mock to finally 720 in 7 Weeks

This is my first post. :) And it's pretty long, be careful!
I started my prep in June 2015. First thing I did was join GmatClub. I read many debriefs and gained tons of insight, and I'm not sure why but I wanted to write one myself when I'm done.
My score isn't all that amazing 720 Q49 V38 IR 7 AWA 5 but it's not bad at all. I'm okay with it. :)

Here's my debrief.

Background -
-Engineer so Quant not a problem and CR decent.
-Have been watching English TV shows/movies since, probably, birth so Comprehension and SC were not too bad.

Prep time - June - July

Hours - 1-2 Weekdays 4-5 Weekends (Irregular in June)

Courses taken - none

Money Spent - 0

Mocks (What I remember; all were free)

1. June 10 - Veritas 600
2. June 11 or 12 - Manhattan 600
3. June 24 or 25 - Gmatpill 650
4. July 4 - GmatPrep 1 710 Q50 V37
5. July 12 - Kaplan 750 Q50
6. July 16 - Economist 740 Q50 V43
7. July 25 - GmatPrep 2 750 Q50 V41

Prep material - OG13, OG Verbal Review 16, Verbal Notes (Sumit, Sahil, Spidey, all are similar), Whiplash Verbal Flash Cards, GMATclub 700+ Questions and GMATAvengers group on Facebook.

Preparation (Goal was 700+):

1.I made sure to track my progress. I wrote down what I did every day and planned accordingly for the next 2-3 days. I wasn't very regular, but it still helped a lot. <- Very important.
2.Started with diagnostic test on OG. Got excellent results.
3.Took 2 mocks Veritas, Manhattan - 600 each. Realized I needed a lot of prep.
4.Can't emphasize enough on this - Official Guides are the best source for preparation.
5.I started with OG 13. Timed every question on my mobile. <-Very Important
6.Finished all PS in 2 days. Got 10-15 wrong. Mostly careless mistakes. Figured, PS is okay.
7.Moved to DS from OG13. 2 days again. Got 30-40 wrong. Weakness found. Reviewed every question. Correct ones too, to figure out the OG approach.
8.Started CR from OG13. Got 30-40 wrong and I took longer than 1:40. Another weak area.
9.Reviewed Veritas and Manhattan mocks. Took 4 weekdays just for reviewing. Noted each mistake.
10.Gave GMATpill mock. Quant improved, verbal not so much.
11.Started SC from OG. Pretty bad results. Left half of the questions for later.
12.Read Sumits verbal notes. <-Very helpful.
13.SC improved drastically after the notes. Finished OG 13 SC. Reviewed each answer. Even correct ones.
14.Neglected RC (overconfidence). <- Very stupid.
15.Decided to give first GMATprep. (You only get 2 for free, so use them wisely)
16.Strategy for timing
a.Quant
i.2 min per avg difficulty question
ii.Less than 1 for easy
iii.If a Q takes more than 3, leave it.
iv.Check the clock every 5 questions, which should mean, every 10 min:
1.On 1st Q 75 min remain
2.On 6th Q 65 min remain
3.On 11th Q 55 min remain and so on.

b.Verbal
i.SC 1 min per Q
ii.CR 1:30 to 2 per Q
iii.RC 3 min to read + 1min for every Q
iv.The avg time of 1 is pretty weird so I didnt check the clock too much.
v.I just divided the remaining time by 2 and made sure I can do 37-39 Qs in total.
vi.Its a pretty crazy strategy, though. Still, it worked for me.
1.On 6th Q, 66 min remain 6 + 33 = 39 Good.
2.On 10th Q, 50 min remain 10 + 25 = 35 Speed up.
3.On 25th Q, 26 min remain 25 + 13 = 38 Okay.
vii.Ignore this if you want to.

17.GMATprep 1 710. Q50 great but V37 mostly RC and CR wrong. Thoroughly reviewed.
18.Burn out. Stopped preparing for about a week.
19.Started RC from OG13. Results were decent. Timing improved since I read a lot.
20.Started practicing GMATclub 700+ for quant and tried the questions posted in GmatAvengers group.
21.Started OG15 verbal review. Tried almost all SC, CR. <- Very helpful
22.Took Kaplan Mock 750. This free test is non-adaptive so I accepted it as 710.
23.Took 2 days reviewing this mock. Continued Verbal Review.
24.Read Sahils verbal notes. Found them to be the same as Sumits.
25.Took Economist GMAT 740 Verbal was harder than GMATprep. But, I read online that their algorithm is in our favor. So accepted it as 710.
26.Burn out. Stopped preparing for 4-5 days.
27.Read Spideys notes. Again similar to Sumits.
28.Did the following in the last week and a half
29.GMATclub 700+ math, and some CR. Gmat Avengers group questions.
30.Whiplash verbal flash cards. Similar again.
31.GMAT Prep 2 750. <- Very happy.
32.Reviewed all mistakes. Mainly DS and CR.
33.Did more GMATclub 700+ questions.
34.Realized that I neglected AWA and IR.
35.IR Practiced GMATPrep Question Bank
36.IR Practiced Veritas Question Bank (free)
37.AWA I read this how-to-get-6-0-awa-my-guide-64327-140.html
38.AWA then this http://tips00.blogspot.in/2012/08/how-t ... -gmat.html
39.AWA Practiced 4 essays, had them rated here http://www.gmatawa.com/<- Very useful

Mistakes:
1.Not enough time. I could not balance work, gmat prep and personal life properly. Notice the burn outs. You cant study continuously so reward yourself a little and take breaks.
2.Havent researched schools properly, too busy with GMAT. Not cool. Essays are more important.
3.Focused so much on weaknesses that my strengths (Quant) got affected.
4.Neglected AWA, IR. AWA is not too hard once youre done with Verbal practice, especially CR. But IR needs practice and speed.
5.Hit Pause during mocks. Not cool.
6.Did not give mocks with both AWA and IR. Not cool.
7.Did not eat healthy before the test. Not cool.
8. Assumed GMATPrep to be very close to GMAT. GMAT was actually tougher. <- Very Important

The day before the Big Day:
1.Watched some Batman, Hangover, Star Wars. All on TV. Exercised a little. <- Important
2.Stayed away from the laptop. Needed my eyes relaxed for the following day. < - Important
3.Checked the passport and GMAT profile for any discrepancies. Do this a week before too.
4.Ate junk. Not cool.

The Big Day:
1.Woke up with a bad cough. Revised the verbal notes.
2.Reached early. Bought 2 snickers.
3.Center was small but enough area for the test. Comfy seats.
4.They just check your passport, you read some rules, sign, get your palm scanned and get started.
5.Entered the schools.
6.AWA was pretty much like the ones I practiced. No surprises. I just wrote down the template before even reading the question. Read the Q, made notes. Wrote some crappy arguments but in a proper format.
7.IR was hard. All questions were longer than GMATprep. I did not have enough time. Im still happy that I scored 7 but at the time I thought I wouldnt even score 4 or 5.
8.Took the break. Calmed myself. Whats done is done. At least the AWA was decent.
9.Came back with 4 minutes left. Wrote down 2 things on the pad Assume nothing and 0 is not positive.
10.Started Quant. Definitely harder than GMATprep. I was behind my 5 Question 10 minutes strategy by 1 to 2 minutes. The cough did not help. Overall I knew I performed okay but not good.
11.Took the second break. Got some fresh air. Had the first snickers. Came back and wrote down common errors in SC on the pad.
12.Started Verbal. CR was very difficult. All answers looked the same! POE did not work. Had to guess mostly. SC was similar to GMATprep. RC passages were long. Overall tougher than GMATprep.
13.After I was done I was ready to cancel the scores. But I saw 720 (Q49 V38). I shoved my face inside the screen to be sure thats a 7 and not a 6.
14.I took the unofficial report. The guy at the center congratulated me. :)
15.Had the second snickers as a reward.

Some Weirdness:
1.I set a reminder on my phone for 9 am every day. It said 800. Kept me motivated.
2.I read a lot of debriefs before I started my prep, I wanted to write one too.
3.I have 500MB of prep books, which I haven't even opened.

I'm preparing for my applications now. The battle has just begun! :D
All the best to everyone! :D

RAGCT 2015 Day 26: According to the investigations of physiologists

NY Times and USA Today have both posted interesting pieces on the Amazon and their work practices
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/techn ... place.html
http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015 ... /31831119/

As someone living in Seattle and familiar with a few folks from Amazon (both present and former employees), I am surprised it has taken this long to surface. Pretty much everyone I talked to, commented that the hours are long, the comp is heavily stock-based, and growth is crazy but very competitive and often changing environment. Curious if anyone has a different perspective? Is this the ideal place for BSchool Grads? :-)

Governor: Over the past five years, 100,000 new jobs were created in my state. My state has low income taxes and a low level of overall business regulation compared to other states. Clearly, these pro-growth economic policies have been successful at creating new jobs.

Reporter: The economy in your state relies heavily on the energy industry, and the energy industry is subject to the same federal regulations as other states. For the past five years, the energy industry has been in a phase of rapid growth. Thus, it was not your economic policies but the growth of the energy industry that helped create so many jobs.

The reporter disputes the Governors assertion by

A. Citing alternative statistics that disprove the Governor
B. Questioning whether the Governors numbers are correct
C. Agreeing with the governor on income taxes, but not on the level of business regulation
D. Pointing out an alternative explanation for the new jobs created
E. Stating that the states overall business regulations are the same as those in other states

Hi all,

I am applying for an mba for fall 2016.

Just a quick clarification. On the School websites the tuition fees are mentioned as-

- "Tuition Fees for Academic year 2016-2017 : USD 60000"

Is this the full tuition amount for the entire 2 year program or is it just for 1 year and thus totals to USD 120000 for the 2 year program?

Pls shed some light on this. Thanks in advance

Dietician: Many of my clients ask me whether a gluten-free diet has health benefits. It is true that people with Celiac disease can experience a variety of ailments from eating foods that contain gluten, and one client told me that switching to gluten-free food resulted in him losing weight. However, only 1% of the population has Celiac disease, and the rest of the population does not experience any negative effects from gluten. Additionally, people on gluten-free diets often lose weight because they are eating fewer carbohydrates, not because of the absence of gluten. For most people, a gluten-free diet has few health benefits.

The portions of the passage marked in bold face play which of the following roles?

A. The first is the main conclusion of the dietician; the second is evidence to support that conclusion
B. The first is evidence used to support a position that the dietician questions; the second is the main conclusion of the dietician
C. The first is evidence used to support the dieticians main conclusion; the second is that conclusion
D. The first is evidence used to support a position that the dietician questions; the second is evidence to support the dieticians conclusion
E. The first is an intermediate conclusion used to support the dieticians main conclusion; the second is the main conclusion

Animal control workers in the forest land around Forestville have been trying to reduce the population of the Wumpus, an aggressive rodent that has been attacking smaller animals in the area.
