Hello,
My name is Chase and I was hoping to get some insight regarding the competitiveness of my potential applications. I am looking to enroll in either highly quantitative or strongly ranked part-time MBA programs starting in 2014. I hope to get myself on a consulting/info systems management track to work with big data and perform advanced statistical analyses.
I was able to score a 740 (Q48, V42) on the GMAT. I also had a 3.42 GPA as an undergrad upon graduating in 2010, but at a generally un-ranked state college in California where I majored in Business Management with a specialization in Entrepreneurship and minored in Statistics. My GPA was boosted by very strong grades in my upper-division business courses, showing strong upward trajectory in my undergraduate performance. Also, my GPA in my Statistics minor was nearly 4.0.
I will have four years of full-time work experience as a research analyst at a small law firm that focuses on shareholder litigation upon matriculation. This position has involved intensive quantitative analysis and, unlike many analytical positions, a good mix of team-oriented and independent work. I also spent time writing and doing research for a statistically-focused baseball publication. Additionally, I have done volunteer work for a group that supports families dealing with substance abuse and some pro bono consulting for an incubation-stage medical device start-up.
As for my application, I feel that I will have strong cover letters, including one from the Dean of Undergraduate Studies from my alma mater. My essays will include my story of working through college while also managing the tremendous stress of having a family member battling drug abuse. However, my application will not include much in the way of management experience, which is realize is a glaring weakness on my résumé.
With all of this in mind, I am planning to apply to such quantitative programs as Tepper and Stern. I am also planning on applying to the Anderson and Haas part-time program. Given my profile, do I appear to be a qualified applicant for these programs? Also, are there any other programs that seem like a fit for me?
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give me. Looking forward to your response!
