Nationality: Canadian
Ethnicity & Gender: White male
Age: 29 (30 at matriculation)
GMAT: 730 (Q43, V48)

Education:
Business Admin. degree from average Canadian university with 3.3 GPA (graduated in 2007)
CFA Charterholder

Work Experience:
1.5 yrs at oil and gas focused PE fund doing internal fund performance analysis/project work
1.5 yrs as analyst at major global bank focused on financing in the oil and gas sector (more corp banking than m&a)
1 yr+ in strategy/finance role at major canadian telecom (current job)

Volunteer:
4 months in Africa with an NGO that works in the microfinance/renewable energy space
Currently volunteer with a non profit that educates youth on entrepreneurship/business.

I have two unemployment/not full time volunteering gaps of ~7 months each (first time due to layoff in 2009 downturn and the second time after I quit to volunteer in Africa) I did a lot of self study during my time off (coding, financial modelling courses etc....), but can’t necessarily account for all of this time with formal volunteer work or studying.

My work experience should show good progression and I think the weak job market/economy largely contributed to the length of my unemployment but I know adcoms could see it as a red flag.

Post MBA:
I am still refining this but leaning towards corp development role in a tech/cleantech company or, if possible, a buyside role focused on investment in either of these sectors.

Schools:
Looking at US programs in the 4-10 range and UCLA/Yale.

Obviously it is tough to get into these schools, but do you think I have a shot?

Thanks.
