Joint application?

I'm considering applying to both JD & mba programs at the same university. Can one apply to l-school and b-school e.g hls/hbs separately without doing a joint application?

For essays and personal statement the separate application is really useful as either school wouldn't check with the other. A joint application has essays that need to justify need for both degrees in each application.
