MBA at NYU Stern: A Friend's Guide
Getting into Stern isn't just about having super good grades, but it is more about showing the adcoms that you're the total package. Stern looks for candidates who can think critically, work well within groups and make a real impact.
1. Grades and Tests: While good grades are indeed important, you don't need to stress out if your grades are bad. Stern looks for well-rounded applicants. And remember, there are different tests you can take - find the one that plays to your strengths.
2. Work Experience: Stern likes people who know how the real-world works. One major thing that Stern looks out for in your work experience is your leadership skills, problem solving mindset and the impact that you have created. It is very important to address these to the adcoms.
3. Extracurriculars and Community Service: What have you done outside of school and work? Have you volunteered, led a club, or started your own thing? This is where you show adcoms that you care about more than just yourself. Your way of giving back to society is something that can highlight your profile. Be it teaching underprivileged children or doing community service every week, everything matters.
4. Your Post-MBA Goals: BE SPECIFIC! Stern wants to see that you've thought about your career path and how their program can help you get there. Your reason to pursue an MBA at Stern should align with your post MBA goals. Highlight what skills you are looking to gain during this program and how it is going to help you achieve your goals.
5. Essays and Interviews: This is your chance to shine while keeping in mind your opportunity to speak about anything that could possibly reduce your chances of an admit. Be it a low GPA, or maybe frequent work switches, speak them all out.
6. Know Your school and program: Research Stern inside and out. What makes them different from other business schools (HIGHLIGHT THEIR UNIQUENESS).
7. Be You: Don't try to be someone you're not. Stern wants authentic candidates.
So, what do you think? Ready to start tackling your Stern application? We can talk about anything from writing killer essays to choosing the right extracurriculars to highlight.
