While on the waitlist, I studied for and passed the waiver exam. Unfortunately, I was eventually denied admission. For those still taking the waiver exam, here is some feedback that I hope helps you out.
First, start by reading Pawan's blog, http://www.pawanagarwal.com/2012/06/haa ... iver-exam/, about the exam.
My tips
- I used the first book in the reference list. It is "Statistics for Business and Economics" by Anderson Sweeney Williams.
- Be sure to read Ch 2-9, 14, 15
- If the topic is not mentioned in the waiver exam PDF, don't study it
- There were 30 or so of us, it took most everyone the full 2 hours. There are 29 questions (not multi-part) using a scantron.
- I used a Ti-34 calculator. Be sure to write out all your work, they seem to give points for work if you don't pass outright.
- Most important - know the basics really well, be able to interpret questions and know what is needed to solve them
- Most of the test did not test your memorization of complicated formulas. I didn't need to memorize most of the formulas in Ch 14 and Ch 15
- Know how to get, use, and solve using z-scores
- Know Ho and Ha tests, how to use z and t tests
- Know ANOVA table - how to read it and understand each value
- Understand covariance
- Know joint probability well - given percentages, understand how to answer questions
- Know how to use all 3 tables
- Understand mean, variance, standard deviation well for all distributions, samples, etc
- Know confidence intervals
- Know combinations well and binomial probability
