Make a Global Impact with the John Molson MBA ICC Case Writing Competition

For its 38th edition, the 2019 John Molson MBA International Case Competition (ICC) is pleased to invite you to submit original business cases. As the 2019 John Molson MBA ICC Organizing Team, we are extremely proud to host and celebrate its continued success. The theme for the 2019 ICC is disruption. It is imperative that business students are cognizant of how disruptive business models are shaping the future.

There are many factors both within a company and in the external environment that can have a disruptive effect on a business, a business model or an industry and case writers are encouraged to submit cases in which managers/owners are facing the opportunities and challenges of either being Disrupters or dealing with the consequences of being Disrupted. It is our intention to emphasize the wide range of this theme, as well as its application, and although technology has been a key element and a prime mover in the disruption of many businesses and business models over time, we do invite case writers to consider a broader definition of the term Disruption.

Although all submitted cases will be considered for the case writing competition, priority when selecting the winners will be given to those encompassing the theme of Disruption. Selection will favor relevant and timely cases that incorporate the challenges that business school graduates will face in creating or adapting to disruption in their careers.

The competition will be held from January 7-11, 2019 in Montreal. It will unite 36 teams of students from different MBA programs around the globe to compete for the Concordia Cup. Up to five cases will be selected for use during the competition.

Applicants

Any individual or group is eligible to submit cases for consideration, except for participating students or persons involved in their students training, coaching or other preparation for the competition.

Requirements

Submitted cases should be geared towards MBA students and must be:

Unpublished, untested, and not presented or discussed in any public forum. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance and the expectation is that writers will abide by this requirement;

Cases can deal with any business discipline e.g. strategy, finance, sustainability, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, international trade, organizational behavior, governance, marketing, succession planning, merger & acquisition;

Written in English or French. Cases submitted in French and selected for the competition will be translated into English and remitted to case writers after the competition;

The winning case writer will receive a prize of $10,000. Second and third place writers will be awarded $5,000 and $3,000 respectively. Writers of all other cases used in the competition will be awarded $1,000 each. If a case has multiple authors, the award will be divided evenly among the authors.
*All currencies are in Canadian dollars

Publishing Writers may opt to have their case considered for subsequent publication under the JMSB banner.

Submission of Entries

Entries must be submitted no later than September 30, 2018. Required documents include: (1) the authors original case, including supporting documentation, and (2) a completed entry form found on the following page. Where required or requested, a release form must also be provided. Cases not selected for the competition will be released back to authors in November 2018 and the winning cases will be released post- competition in January 2019.

Competition Judges

The selection committee will be composed of executives from the ICC Board of Directors. Selection criteria include the interest and relevance of the issue(s) raised to the students, the quality and clarity of the writing, and the nature of the challenge to be dealt with by the students. All decisions made by the selection committee are final.

Motorcyclists are told to always wear helmets when they ride their motorcycles. But helmets only protect riders when they have wrecks, and wrecks occur only once out of every 1,000 rides. Therefore, a motorcyclist would be perfectly safe if he wore his helmet only once out of every 1,000 rides.

Which one of the following employs a flawed argumentative strategy that is most closely parallel to the flawed argumentative strategy in this statement?

(A) My European client calls once a week, always in the evening, after everyone has left the office. Ill be sure to get his messages if I turn on my telephones answering machine once a week.
(B) This sunscreen allows me to stay in the sun 15 times longer than I could without sunscreen. If I apply two coats of it, it will allow me to stay in the sun 30 times longer.

(D) Seat belts protect passengers in auto-mobile accidents, but accidents only occur in one out of every 2,000 car trips. Because drivers are in the car the most, they should wear their seat belts most often.
(E) Top business schools accept one out of every 20 MBA applicants. Therefore, someone who wants to get into a top business school should apply to 20 of them.

Non-Indian Origin Applicants

To enable non-Indian origin applicants to complete their Visa formalities in time, we follow a rolling evaluation process for them. Their application is evaluated, and their admission decision is communicated within six weeks of receiving the completed application.

The essay questions of the PGP program of The Indian School of Business have been changed for the admission cycle of 2018-19. Like last year, this years applicants will write the two required questions. However, the word limit of essay 1 has been reduced from 500 words to 400 words. Hence instead of 800 words, this years ISB applicants will have only 700 words to showcase their candidacy to the Ad Com. ISB no longer provides an option to write optional essay. However, applicants have space on the Education page of the application to explain any gaps during their education.

Note that ISBs online application will not accept even one word over the limit of either of its essays.

With significant self- reflection, careful planning, and preparation, you can present an impressive and convincing picture of your candidacy as well as your fit with the school.

Lets take a closer look at the essay questions:

Essay 1: At ISB we value diversity as it enhances both the in-class and out of class learning experience. Tell us how would you contribute to the same? (400 words max)

This question is a little different from last years question. Instead of asking what distinguishes the applicants from others (personally and professionally) this question specifically asks them what they will contribute to the learning experience of their class mates in and outside the classroom, and how they will add to the diversity of the classroom. The topic is similar to last years essay topic in essence as you have to showcase your best self, your well- rounded personality in order for the ISB admission committee to admit you.

Showcase your uniqueness in Different Areas: To paint a cohesive and strong picture of you as a candidate, focus on your unique attributes (personal and professional), provide examples of how you have demonstrated them in the past, and what you would bring to the ISB. The how part of your story/accomplishment is as important as the what part.

At ISB, you will be competing with the traditional IT applicant pool, so in the professional realm, you can showcase your ability to face challenges in other roles e.g. your adaptability to changes in the global world, your talent to convince others of executing your innovative ideas, your courage to take calculated risks that yielded results, and so on. If you are from a different industry, you will bring to the table your deep knowledge and experience of your industry. After explaining your unique professional attribute/skill, illustrate it by an example explaining how you have demonstrated it at work, and then explain how you will add value to the ISB through your contribution in classroom discussions or your participation in student led clubs or organizations.

When discussing personal attributes, think of your special talents. Pick one extracurricular activity i.e. sports, music, dance, painting, writing or any interest/ hobby that you are passionate about and have enjoyed pursuing. Share your achievements in that area and explain how you will enrich the experience of your class mates by getting involved in a club or student led organization at the ISB , leaving it a better place. Please note that it is important to support your claims about your potential contribution to specific clubs and organizations by specific examples from your past experiences, personal or professional, in the given area. To demonstrate your fit with the program, you must showcase what you have done in the past and how you are going to be a strong contributor to ISB.
To craft an effective response, you should have a thorough understanding of the schools resources (curriculum, faculty, clubs, organizations, and student led activities). You should also reach out to alumni and current students to get additional insights about the schools resources and culture.

Lastly, and most importantly, be as precise as you can in presenting your stories. With 400 maximum words allowed, you can allot approximately 150-200 words to detailing your unique attributes illustrated by your accomplishments (mainly leadership stories) and approximately 200-250 words to explaining what value you will add to the ISB.

Essay 2: Enrolling in a Business School is an important career decision. Critically look at your career to date, the choices you have made, the key influences behind those choices, your goals for the future and how do you think ISB's PGP can help you in achieving your goals? (300 words max)

There is a slight change in this years goals essay question. That is, in addition to asking career goals and how ISB will help you achieving your goals, it also asks about applicants career history and the choices they have made in their career.

This is a straightforward goals essay that requires you to make a logical connection between your past, present, and future. This means your story should connect your past (work-experience, skills), present (your need of an MBA from ISB to achieve your goals), and your future (goals and objectives).

Begin your essay with a brief career history and provide details about how you have pursued your career, acquired new skills and progressed along your career path all these years (2-3 sentences). Provide your rationale behind the career choices you have made. Then go on to describe why you believe that an MBA is the next logical step in your career path NOW? What are those skills that you still lack which you hope to acquire by an MBA? How an MBA will fill the gaps in your career?

Then explain your post MBA and long-term goals. Please make sure to demonstrate a logical connection between your short-term and long-term goals. In other words, explain how you will move from step 1 to step 2 and so on. Make sure that your goals are realistic as well as ambitious. That is, if you aim for a technology or a consulting role, youll need to demonstrate that you already possess some skills/experience in that area and are now aiming to enhance those skills. Likewise, if you are a career changer, you should provide evidence as to how your current skill set would facilitate this transition.
Once you have elaborated your goals, explain how an MBA from ISB is your best bet at this time? How it will help you achieve your goals? Please make sure to have a thorough knowledge of PGP program of ISB so you can demonstrate how its resources (curriculum, faculty, clubs, student communities etc.) are aligned with your goals and will bring you closer to your dreams.

Since you have only 300 words to discuss your career history, your career goals and their link to the PGP program of ISB, you need to be extremely precise in presenting your case and make every word count. Again, ISBs online application will not accept even one word over the limit of its essays.

You may organize your essay in the following way:

Brief career history (approximately 80-90 words)
Short term Long term goals (approximately 90-100 words)
Connection between ISBs resources and your goals (approximately100-120 words)

When choosing your stories for these two essays, make sure you maintain a balance between your professional and personal stories that showcases your well-rounded candidacy.

Certainly unique, but I'm unsure if it is appealing to adcoms.
I work for a small manufacturer of specialty chemical additives for the coatings, adhesives, and composites industry. I began as a developmental chemist in the R&D lab. After about 1 year, I was promoted to a technical sales representative role, and given a new territory to develop. This is a business to business sales role in which I interact with other small businesses as well as many of the top 10 paint and coatings manufacturers, several tier 1 & 2 automotive suppliers. I have been able to generate a pipeline of new opportunities in both new and existing markets. Working for my current employer has allowed by to have a high level of autonomy and a number of unique experiences. Do adcoms find this type of experience desirable?
In total, I will have 63 months of work experience at the time of matriculation in the fall of 2019.

The role of nurturing in determining ones behavioral traits

$
0
0
The role of nurturing in determining ones behavioral traits has been hotly contested. Historically, geneticists believed that behavioral traits are inherited. After all, many properties of the brain are genetically organized and don't depend on information coming in from the senses. Since active genes are essentially inherited, most traditional geneticists believe that nurturing environment plays little role in shaping ones behavioral traits.

However, a new line of research indicated that methyl groups can activate dormant genes, bringing about a slew of changes much later in a persons life. The methyl group works like a placeholder in a cookbook, attaching to the DNA within each cell to select only those recipes - er, genes - necessary for that particular cells proteins, telling the DNA what kind of cells to form. The first such observation was in which methyl groups activated by causes ranging from exposure to certain chemicals to changes in diet set off a cascade of cellular changes resulting in cancer. Because methyl groups are attached to the genes, residing beside but separate from the double-helix DNA code, their study is dubbed epigenetics - epi referring to Greek for outer or above.

Behavioral geneticists, encouraged by this discovery proved that traumatic experiences such as child neglect, drug abuse, or other severe stresses also set off epigenetic changes to the DNA inside the neurons of a persons brain, permanently altering behavior. Similarly, through multivariate analysis, they proved that identical twins, in scenarios where one twin has gone through a life altering event, can have vastly different reaction to a stressful situation.

1. The primary purpose of the passage is to

A. propose a new framework that incorporates the role of genetics and the role to life experiences in determining an individuals behavioral traits.
B. summarize the new research on behavioral traits and inheritance.
C. present findings indicating that, like inheritance, nurturing plays a role in shaping ones behavioral traits
D. argue through new findings that life experiences play a vital role in shaping an individuals behavioral traits.
E. establish a causal relationship between an individuals life experiences and his reaction to stressful situations.

2. Why does the author state highlighted text:

A. to provide a reason for geneticists belief that behavioral traits are inherited.
B. to prove that active genes and not dormant genes define key behavioral traits.
C. to describe the role played by genetic inheritance in determining ones personality.
D. to indicate that there have been few experiments in the past linking behavior and life experience.
E. to lay the foundation for the development of epigenetics.

3. Which of the following may be inferred from the passage?

A. It is quite likely for twins to develop different personality traits.
B. Resetting the changes introduced by corresponding methyl groups can help cure cancer.
C. Most cancers are caused due to ones life experiences rather than due to ones genetic make-up.
D. Traumatic experiences that activate dormant genes can bring about behavioral changes.
E. Identical twins who have led different lives are likely to have different behavioral traits.

4. In the context of this passage, what is the importance of the example illustrating how cancer is caused?

A. It proved that life experiences can alter a persons personality traits.
B. It provided definitive proof of personality change in a person much later in his life.
C. It showed that genes that may be dormant could be activated by external triggers many years after birth.
D. It led to the coining of the term - epigenetics.
E. It led to a boom in the study of Behavioral genetics.
